YOUR FIRSTÂ DRIVING LESSON
What will happen on my first time in the drivers seat?
Heres a step by step guide and what you can expect to happen on your first driving lesson.
HALCYON DRIVING SCHOOL INSTRUCTOR ARRIVES
Your Instructor will arrive at your agreed pick up location. They will introduce themselves and ask to see your provisional license and perform an eye sight test - getting you to read a number plate from approx 20 meters away (remember your glasses if you need them to drive)
DRIVE TO A QUIET LOCATION
Your instructor will drive you to a quiet road. Don't worry you wont be driving on the main roads or onto the roundabouts on your first lesson.
Your first lesson is mainly to get to know your instructor, for them to get to know you and your learning techniques and for you to get a feel of the car.
Make sure you ask any questions you have - no matter how simple or daft it may seem to you. No question is a daft question and we would rather you be confident that you can ask any questions.
IN THE DRIVERS SEAT
Once you are at a quiet location, your instructor will swap seats with you. The scary part - you are now in the drivers seat.
Your instructor will explain what all the buttons, pedals and controls in the car do, what they are for and when to use them.
You will start by going through what we call the 'Cockpit Drill and Controls'. This is the first stage of learning to drive, knowing how to set your car up safely, so that you are ready to begin driving.
MOVING OFF AND STOPPING
You will not be expected to be perfect or do anything you do not feel comfortable with on your first lesson.
Your instructor will demonstrate how the clutch works, and let you have a go at moving off and then bringing the car to a stop. You may do a little bit of steering.
Rememeber though, your instructor is with you every step of the way and will always ensure that whatever you do is both safe and controlled - they have dual controls on their side of the car meaning that they can stop the car if you get into any difficulty or need help.
END OF THE LESSON
By the end of your first lesson you should have a good understanding of the basic controls of the car and had the chance to move the vehicle off and stop.
Your instructor will drop you back off at your pick up location, and recap on what you have done in the lesson. If you have any more questions feel free to ask your instructor. Then - book in your next lesson and hopefully you will feel a little less nervous and more excited for your next lesson.
