ABOUT HALCYON DRIVING SCHOOL
Halcyon Driving School was formed by Duane, an apporved driving instructor for nearly 4 years. After starting with a well know school, Duane went on to work for a local driving school before finally setting up as an independent instructor in June 2019.
His motivation was to build a driving school that was well know for being friendly, corteous and well trained and experienced driving instructors.
Although, experience does not always have to come from being an instructor for many many years, driving experience comes from past work. As mentioned below in Duanes profile.

Halcyon was chosen as the name of the driving school for 2 reasons:
Halcyon means : deonting a period of time in the past that was happy and peaceful
​
Halcyon is also a bird - which in terms of driving..... Freedom
​
Both these meanings are what learning to drive is all about. Learning in a safe, calm and peaceful environment, whilst also having an enjoyable and happy experience, and ultimately - gaining your driving license to gain the freedom of your life.

DUANE POWNALL
ADI and Owner of Halcyon Driving School
I have been a driving instructor for nearly 6 years now and had some great success in that time. I initially started my driving instructor career working for a national driving school, before then going on to work with a more local school.
In June 2019 I started as an independent instructor and set up Halcyon Driving. In that short time, I have trained up one new instructor, expanding my team to 2 of us.
My previous experience working on the Ambulance service driving emergency vehicles, and before that as a Bus Driver, has given me a broad knowledge and extensive skills driving on all types or roads. I have had some great feedback already from past and present learners for my calm and welcoming way of learning. (p.s I will get a better photo, I do smile 😀)

DARREN SMITHERS
Approved Driving Instructor
I started as a driving instructor in July 2019, initially as a trainee driving instructor under the supervision of Duane. After a short couple of months of extensive training, I successfully qualified as an Approved driving instructor. I have already had success with a number of passes already, and more soon to come. My learners, past and present love my laidback but firm approach to teaching, ensuring that each learner gets the most out of each lesson. My aim is to ensure everyone I teach becomes a confident and safe driver in the future. I previously worked as a bus driver for over 13 years, gaining great amounts of driving experience, and I am also a keen motorcyclist. Both these in turn, have given me the necessity skills, which I want to pass on to new learner. Plus, I drive a Mini.

OUR TUITION VEHICLES
We have both automatic and manual cars
Each car is well maintained, fitted with dual controls and comes with modern technology including sat nav, hill start assist, air conditioning and digital speedometers.
